In order for TransUnion to share sensitive information, like your credit report, with you, they have to confirm your identity. Your SSN is one of the criteria used to verify your identity.
We do not store your SSN in our databases. We pass it securely to TransUnion so they can confirm your SSN matches what they have on file. Once your SSN is passed on to TransUnion it no longer resides in our systems.
We implement reasonable and appropriate data security controls to protect your personal information and will only retain it for as long as necessary for the purposes set forth in our Privacy Policy. In addition:
We are SOC 2 and SOC 3 certified. We conduct annual SOC 2 Type II security audits which require us to prove compliance over a period of time, typically six months to one year. SOC 2, aka Service Organization Control Type II, is a cybersecurity compliance framework developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The primary purpose of SOC 2 is to ensure that third-party service providers store and process client data in a secure manner.
We are PCI DSS Compliant - we follow the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which is the leading industry data security standard to protect credit card information and transactions - and must certify our compliance each year.
